Electronic Pre-Press

B&W Press utilizes a complete computer-to-plate digital workflow process for output. Digital files are preferred for best image reproduction. If you prefer to perform the pre-press work yourself, you can review our Pre-press Digital Mechanical Standards for complete guidelines.

Electronic pre-press includes state-of-the-art Mac platform equipment for the following programs:

  • QuarkXpress
  • Freehand
  • Illustrator
  • Photoshop
  • Pagemaker
  • Trapwise

Digital Specifications/PDF File Requirements

  • PDF (Portable Document Format) is the requested file format for B&W Press. If unable to supply in PDF format, then supply files in the resident program. Supply all fonts and support files. Use the “collect for output” function in Quark Xpress.
  • PDF files must be created with Acrobat Distiller 4.05 or higher.
  • Scanned images must be high resolution (between 200 and 400 dpi), saved as CMYK (no RGB or JPEG graphics) as a TIFF or EPS.
  • All fonts must be embedded in the PDF and be Type 1 or 3 - No Truetype.
  • Bleeds must be .1250” outside trim area.
  • All PDF’s must be high res/press optimized.
  • Files must be Right Reading landscape mode only 100% size.
  • ALL FILES MUST be accompanied by a composite Laserproof. Color Laser if possible. Color Laser will be used as a “guide for color” only.

Files submitted electronically must be submitted on one of the following forms of removable storage media: Macintosh compatible 3.5 Floppy disk, Zip Disk (100MB), CD-ROM, or DVD.

PDF files can be uploaded to our ftp site or emailed to your CSR if accompanied by a faxed black and white laser at time of upload.  Call our Desktop Administrator for further detailed information.

Templates

Our template files are available in our on-line library. In additon to the files in the on-line library, digital or sheet templates, quotations and samples can be sent overnight at your request. QuarkXpress electronic templates are also available overnight for all formats. For instructions on how to send your files to B&W Press electronically, contact the customer service department. Instructions may either be e-mailed or faxed to you.

Film Specifications (if supplied)

One-piece right reading film negatives, emulsion side down, 120 or 133 line screen, and maximum density of 250% for four-color process in any one spot. Please call before you output film.

B&W Press will output film from your files or create film from black and white artwork, four-color process printed samples or color transparencies that are scanned on our Topaz scanner.

*B&W prefers digital files to film for best possible reproduction direct-to-plate.
